Clipboard Music Instrument
Check out this cool do-it-yourself music instrument using a clipboard! This short one-minute music composition was created using sounds recorded from a large clipboard, colored pencils, and paper clips. Pitched sounds were created by plucking a long rubber band on the side of the clipboard, and unpitched sounds were created by placing colored pencils/paper clips on top of the clipboard and tapping/tilting the clipboard. I used the TASCAM TR-5 recorder to record the sounds, and the sounds were then inputted into a sampler VST called TX16WX. Pitched sounds were used to create melodic lines and riffs, while unpitched sounds were used to create percussion accompaniment. The song was composed and produced in Sibelius and Logic Pro X, respectively. Listen to the full song.
Rubber Band
The rubber band on the side of the clipboard was used to create pitched sounds. The tuner on the rubber band acts like a finger depressing the string, which when plucked creates the C pitch.
Colored Pencils
Colored pencils were placed on top of the clipboard, which was then tapped/rolled to create unpitched percussion sounds.
Paper Clips
Paper clips were placed on top of the clipboard, which was then tapped to create unpitched sound.
